In general, air fryers cook foods much faster than your traditional oven or even stove at times because they are small and circulate heat efficiently. Because of the high heat, they also give your food a crispier texture compared to the oven.
Oven to Air Fryer Conversion: A general rule of thumb when converting an oven based recipe to an air fryer recipe is to:
- Reduce the temperature by 25°F
- Reduce the cooking time by 20%
Alternatively, you can also do the opposite and convert an air fryer recipe for oven, if you don't have an air fryer or want to use the oven instead.
Air Fryer to Oven Conversion: To convert in the other direction and convert an air fryer recipe into an oven recipe:
- Increase the temperature by approximately 35°F
- Increase the cooking time by 25%
General Tips When Using Air Fryer to Convert Recipes
Here are general tips when it comes to cooking with an air fryer:
- Use the pre-heat function if possible. Pre-heating the air fryer does not take that long as an oven, and helps cook your foods more evenly and faster. If you are not using the pre-heat function, add 1-2 minutes to the cooking time.
- Sometimes, you can go oil free, but i find that spraying olive oil or butter can help with crispiness the food, especially with vegetables.
- Do not use any parchment paper or any liner in the air fryer in the preheating your air fryer. The paper tends to be light and can catch fire with the high levels of heat. Always use liners or foil with food on it. Most of the time, you can place food directly in the air fryer, without any liners!
- Check through the half way mark - sometimes you may need to toss your veggies around or turn your frozen food over to help cook evenly. Checking once or even twice does not hurt!
- Do not crowd the basket as the air fryer is designed for smaller quantities of food. If you find yourself making a large meal, batch them up in different rounds. For subsequent rounds, reduce cooking time by 1 minute.
Conversion Tips when Air Frying Vegetables
Air frying veggies have a broad range depending on the taste and texture you are looking to achieve. For instance, veggies cooked at slightly higher temperatures, can achieve a crispier texture. Here is a quick guide on how air fryer temperatures and times differ based on the firmness of the vegetables:
Vegetable Firmness | Air Fryer Temp | Air Fryer Time |
Firm (e.g. Potatoes, carrots, etc) | 380-420°F | 10-15 mins |
Medium (e.g. cauliflower, broccoli, etc) | 350-400°F | 8-12 mins |
Tender (e.g. peppers, mushrooms, zucchini etc) | 325-390°F | 6-9 mins |

- Use a non aerosol cooking spray to coat the food for a crispier texture.
- If you are air frying legumes such as chickpeas, make sure they are pre-cooked before you fry them. You can either use canned tins (rinsed and drained) or cook them in the pressure cooker before air frying them.
