Why you'll love this vegan homemade honey mustard recipe
- This dressing takes just 5 minutes to make with 4 simple ingredients!
- This oil-free version has less calories and fat than traditional non-vegan honey mustard as well as most grocery store-bought vegan brands. In fact, store-bought vegan brands typically clock in around 130 calories and 10-12 grams of fat per serving, while this oil-free version has about 65 calories and 1 gram of fat per serving. Talk about a pretty healthy honey mustard dressing!
- It is super versatile, doubling as both a dressing and a dip!
- My favorite way to use this is to spruce up boring work lunches.
Ingredients you'll need for delicious vegan honey mustard dressing
- Mustard (Spicy Brown or Dijon): Dijon is what is typically used to make honey mustard; however, if you want to add a hint of heat, use spicy brown instead. I like it both ways but prefer the spicy brown version slightly (that's just personal preference). Spicy brown is what was used in the photographs for this post.
- Light Agave Nectar: This sweetener has both a similar color and flavor to honey which is why it works in this vegan version. However, you can substitute the agave for maple syrup if you'd like. You'll just need to use a bit more maple syrup as it is not as sweet as agave.
- Apple Cider Vinegar: This helps to balance out the flavor and adds a little more tangy flavor.
- Garlic Powder: This seasoning adds just a little bit more flavor to the dressing/dip.

Enjoy this tangy dressing right away or store in a sealed mason jar or other airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Just give it a stir before each use.
Ideas for serving
First and foremost, this delicious dressing is perfect for salad!
My personal favorite is enjoying this creamy salad dressing with a spring mix salad tossed with chopped apples and walnuts.
You could even throw in some grapes or strawberries if you'd like.
It's also perfect with a blend of spring mix and arugula with sugar snap peas and radishes.
You can also try it on a rice or quinoa bowl.
As a dipping sauce, this honey mustard is great with veggies, tofu nuggets, vegan nuggets, potato wedges, fries and kettle chips.
You can also use it on your favorite sandwiches, wraps and veggie burgers.
Frequently asked questions
Traditional honey mustard is often made with mayo which contains eggs and is therefore, not vegan. Of course, the mayo can be substituted with a vegan mayo, but this easy recipe omits the mayo entirely to keep it low in fat. While some store-bought honey mustard salad dressings do not use mayo, they do contain honey, which brings us to another commonly asked question…
The short answer is no since honey comes from bees and bees are animals. However, the subject tends to be a controversial one. For a more in-depth look into this question, check out this article from Minimalist Vegan. If desired, you can use a vegan honey alternative in this vegan honey mustard recipe. For the purposes of this recipe, please note that it does not contain any honey.
Typically, yes, mustard is vegan with the exception of honey mustard as noted above.
However, note that some Dijon mustard is made with white wine which is often not vegan due to the fining agents used. Therefore, you can opt for the store-bought Dijon mustards that are made with vinegar instead of wine.
For reference, a few brands of Dijon that are made with vinegar and state they are vegan include 365, Thrive Market and Organicville.
